As part of a larger proposal to revitalize Atlantic Basin, Red Hook Beach will be a sand filled site suitable for a wide range of activities. Similar to Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City, Queens (www.watertaxibeach.com), Red Hook Beach will include a restaurant and be accessible from Manhattan via the New York Water Taxi.
As a Public Private Partnership Red Hook Beach will have both public and private space. In the pubilc space any one can gather, bring picnics and enjoy the view of Governor's Island and the Lower Manhattan skyline. As with Water Taxi Beach, the Beach part of Red Hook Beach will be private. That means it will be open to the public during posted hours for no fee or for a limited fee. Likewise, while the public is welcome to the Beach, outside food and drinks are not. Like any restaurant, Red Hook Beach will earn its keep selling food, wine and tropical drinks.
Swimming?
We use the term 'beach' of course with some artistic license. While we encourage beach goers to unwind, put their feet in the sand and enjoy the far off tropical paradise of... South Brooklyn, there is no access to the actual water.
The Basins' of Redhook
The two major basins' in Red Hook, Erie Basin and Atlantic Basin, are large multi-acre water filled "Marinas" where various vessels can dock. Historical maps and drawings of the shoreline show Atlantic Basin was once a natural cove that was dug out and improved upon creating a 17 acre water site where dozens of tall ships once docked.
